New SharePoint Interoperability Solution Architecture (SISA) Standards Group

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

New SharePoint Interoperability Solution Architecture (SISA) Standards GroupAn interesting piece of news coming out of the SharePoint Conference was the introduction of a new standards group specifically for SharePoint (news, site).

No this isn’t coming from Microsoft, but rather from a group of Microsoft partners including founding members Danny Boulanger – Alcero, Susan Yee – Active Data Exchange, Larry D. Hunt – Integrated Digital Systems/ScanAmerica Inc., Tony Lanni – Avepoint, Esa Tervo – Neoxen Systems, and Mike Fitzmaurice – Nintex.

Called the SharePoint Interoperability Solution Architecture (SISA) Standards Group, the organization wants to create a software standard for developing SharePoint applications. The purpose? To simplify the integration and interoperability of solutions built for SharePoint by ISVs.

Products designated as being SISA™ compliant will have the ability to exchange information, processes, and tasks between two or more different SharePoint systems or components on a standard platform.

Other participating members include Bamboo Solutions, MetaVis Technologies, Atalasoft and Mark Logic.

We asked Tom Rizzo, Senior Director of Product Management for SharePoint if Microsoft was involved with this new standards organization. Rizzo told us that they had heard of it, but have not had deep discussions with the group as of yet. He did say that Microsoft is very supportive of community based initiatives, and that they passionately listen to customers and partners.

There’s not much information on the SISA website yet (which by the way is a SharePoint based website), but we’ll keep an eye on this standards group to see if it’s able to take hold and make advances in the greater SharePoint partner community.

The Semantic Web Moves Forward: HTML+RDFa Draft Published

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Without complex decision trees helping computers determine what pieces of text relate to what, it’s nearly impossible to make use of the wealth of data available on the web.

In the case where you’re only interested in people reading your pages, that’s fine. But what if you want other sites to access and use the data you’re offering with a full understanding of the context? We’re one step closer to a standard that defines exactly how to make this clear.

For months now we’ve been talking about RDFa and how this proposed standard leads toward the semantic web. Recently, this vision took a step further toward reality.

Open Source CMS Jahia Gives More Control to Partners

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Open Source Jahia Introduces New Global Partner ProgramJahia (news, site), an open source content management system vendor, is on a quest to further penetrate the U.S. market (among others) in addition to its French operations. The new global Jahia Business Partner Program gives partners more control and flexibility with free pre-sales support and various levels of certification, including those for VARs and SIs scenarios.

According to Jahia, they don’t want to compete with their partner network when it comes to CMS implementations. Hence, the “non-compete guarantee.” That means Jahia plans to refer almost all of the integration work to its partners — around 70 of them in 15 countries around the globe. Some of Jahia’s partners are in the U.S., the market to which Jahia is paying more and more attention.

“Being open source and not competing with services partners is unique within the open source industry… We are focusing on software and its related support…,” said Emmanuel Garcin, Jahia’s VP and GM for North America.

While having an implementation partner network is a common approach in the industry, why not do that work in-house? Why not move toward a native Professional Services approach? Sure, it’s more costly and requires you to have, grow and nurture the in-house subject matter expertise. While it’s certainly not a deal-breaker in many CMS selection processes, different organizations may feel differently about partner vs. vendor implementations.

#ARMA09: Implementing a CMS, Are We on the Same Page?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

It’s a really good question. When you have so many different departments involved in setting system requirements, how easy is it to make sure everyone comes out with the same understanding of what the system should actually do? All too often, team members from IT, legal, HR, finance, Records Management and others, come away with different expectations.

So, the even better question that the speaker at the ARMA

Highlights of the Week

  • Can Google Wave Change the Future of Content Management?. Right now, most document management solutions work under the idea of many people making separate edits, locking the document to prevent edits stepping on one another. But what if you could all edit a document at the same time like you can in Google Docs and similar tools? That, in some ways, is the promise of Google Wave.
