5 apps get you tweeting from the desktop

No Fail Whale(Credit: CNET)

What’s better than posting tweets from Twitter.com? Just about everything.

Third-party Twitter apps are typically more powerful, crammed with managerial features that get you quickly viewing, sorting, replying to messages, and retweeting in a click or tap. They automatically shorten URLs to fit Twitter’s character limit, and help you post pictures through other services, like TwitPic and yfrog. Most of these desktop apps manage multiple Twitter accounts, are customizable, and are more attractive than Twitter online. They also sometimes succeed in posting your tweets during times when Twitter’s site famously fails.

Convinced yet? Good. We’ve rounded up five desktop applications that help you post tweets and retweets to Twitter. Four run on the Adobe AIR runtime environment (Windows | Mac | Linux), which you need to download before you install the Twitter apps. But enough of the technical details–get tweeting!

Firefox Mobile: Fennec 1.0 Beta 3 for Nokia tablets

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Fennec logo

The last peep we heard about Fennec was in late June, when Mozilla updated its mobile edition of the Firefox browser for Windows Mobile phones. This week, the Firefox browser maker has released an updated version for the platform powering Nokia N800 and N810 Internet Tablets: Fennec 1.0 Beta 3. (You can also download a desktop emulator for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.)

Following ‘the rule of threes,’ it’s a good guess that after this third beta, the final version will be next in line.

This beta update for the Linux-based Maemo operating system especially addresses performance and user interface, starting with a theme refresh. In the future, the interface will also be better able to support a variety of devices and orientations.

Additionally, Fennec 1.0 beta 3 takes on slow scrolling and panning. The third beta should see sped-up performance and the ability to scroll iframes. As you pan, Fennec for Maemo’s new image-rendering system will save more of the screen. It should take less time to refresh the screen as you navigate back and forth.

The next build will focus on smoothing out rough edges, Stuart Parmenter, Mozilla’s director of mobile engineering, said in a blog post. The team will particularly pay attention to using the browser’s new rendering system to nix the checkerboard pattern you see when panning around.

As a beta product, Fennec 1.0 beta 3 is intended for testers to help work out the kinks. Read the full release notes here.

Another beta bump for Opera 10

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Opera 10 beta 3 was released Wednesday for Windows, Mac, and Linux users. With a strong European following, the preview version has been able to keep this popular alternative browser competitive by offering page rendering quality comparable to Google Chrome, while offering a robust list of features.

Opera is touting the stability and performance enhancements in the third beta, but in casual testing it appeared to be have the slowest JavaScript engine when compared with Chrome and Firefox. Opera notched 3237.4ms in the SunSpider JavaScript test, while Firefox completed the test in 1142.4ms and Chrome was more than twice as fast as that, reaching 508.2ms.

However, JavaScript speed isn’t everything, and Opera’s built-in feature set offers much to users who like a strong out-of-the-box experience. There are far more options available now for tweaks tabs. Through the menu bar View and then Customize, you can move your visual tab bar to the sides of the browser as well as the top or bottom. You can also toggle showing only favicons or text, or force the tab bar to use multiple row, or just a single one. These options are available for all toolbars in Opera, making toolbar customization more streamlined than in other browser.

There’s now a crash logger that Opera says will make the browser “rock-solid,” although that’s unclear at press time whether that means that if one tab crashes, the entire browser won’t.

Users on slower or dial-up connections should see performance improvements in Opera Turbo, too, although they didn’t specify what those changes were or what kind of benchmarks users should expect. If you’re seeing dramatically better numbers for Opera Turbo on a slow connection, let me know in the comments.

Notably, Opera Unite remains in alpha development and continues to be a separate entity from the main build of the Opera 10 beta. There’s no word on how soon integration will occur, although it is apparently planned for before the public release of Opera 10.
