By definition, being an innovative company means providing a service that is new and different. But with the sheer number of companies all vying for the same status, it can be a bit difficult to pinpoint which are providing something truly out of the ordinary, and which are just full of fluff.

IDC recently helped clear a path in the confusion by compiling a list of what they feel are the top underdogs, or, as they put it, Innovative Information Access Companies Under $100M to Watch. We’re happy to report that included on that list are three very familiar names: FatWire, MarkLogic and Recommind.

Recession, what recession? Fatwire Software has announced record-breaking financial results for the first half of 2008, mostly on the back of increased sales for its licensed products.

As we reported last month, Fatwire scored a tremendous coup in securing the Military.com contract, and other strong sales growth saw licensing revenue jump 75% from the first half of 2007, with total revenue up 66%.
